RUN AGAINST TB IN CHILDREN

Over 250,000 children develop TB and 100.000 children will continue to die each year from TB.

Rotary International District 3950 in realization of its seriousness has taken the initiative to support the program of the Department of Health. Our club in particular has committed to be the public service arm of the campaign against TB in children and today's activity is one of a series of activities lined up to pay particular attention as a health risk and a preventable disease. And that TB can be cured.

Today, at Roxas plaza circle, the 1st 3k Fun Run Marathon to STOB TB was a very successful and significant event. There were about more or less 250 runners who joined us in the fundrive run for TB campaign. Kids and adult alike had fun competing for the 3K run with more than P30,000 cash prize at stake for Men {12 under}, Men Open, Female {12 under} and Female Open. Awards for the youngest runner of 7 yo {about three kids} went home with reference hard bound books, the biggest group delegation went home with cash gifts and boxes of reference books, too and the biggest contributor was given gift certificates from Goldilocks.

Amazing to note that the club, in running the event, had minimal expenses but more donations and benefactors who have partnered with us in carrying the said event. We would like to thank the following for their invaluable support in our campaign:

Comments

Congrats, Pres. Pip and RC Roxas on your successful 3K Fun Run.
This is an excellent idea to stress that a healthy individual and healthy lifestyle are needed to Stop TB Now!
Consider these facts:
Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious disease. Like the common cold, it spreads through the air.Only people who are sick with TB in their lungs are infectious. When infectiouspeople cough, sneeze, talk or spit, they propel TB germs, known as bacilli, into the air. A person needs only to inhale a small number of these to beinfected.
Left untreated, each person with active TB disease will infect on averagebetween 10 and 15 people every year. But people infected with TB bacilli willnot necessarily become sick with the disease. The immune system "wallsoff" the TB bacilli which, protected by a thick waxy coat, can lie dormantfor years. When someone's immune system is weakened, the chances of becomingsick are greater.*
Someone in the world is newly infected with TB bacilli every second.*
Overall, one-third of the world's population is currently infected with theTB bacillus.*
5-10% of people who are infected with TB bacilli (but who are not infectedwith HIV) become sick or infectious at some time during their life. People withHIV and TB infection are much more likely to develop TB.
Let us all join together and support DG Edgar Sy's initiative and D-3850's advocacy to Stop TB Now!

One Call - The Wonder of PRM

Today, we got a call from PP CHARLIE LASTIMOSO of the Rotary Club of Tagum, District 3860. Apparently, he is the uncle of PP Rommel Lastimoso. He left Roxas City in 1986. He was very happy to recall his roots and he is looking forward to keep the communication open between our clubs.
It was an overwhelming call because he found out of our names with P. Pip in the Phil. Rotary Magazine {PRM}. What a way to keep in touch with our kababayan from Mindanao. It's so amazing what PRM can do for everyone else.
One time, one of the previous proposed projects with the handicapped also originated thru an article and pictures that we posted in the PRM and another local magazines which featured our handicapped children in wheelchairs that was read by one of the past presidents of a Rotary club in Australia just after Typhoon Frank. Now, that project is being materialized just because of that "one call." It is now an international outreach project by that club to be delivered to our handicapped children in STAC -Kalibo very soon. It is still part of our MAKE DREAMS REAL project that is being sustained thru constant communication with PP Lou of RC Brimbank, Australia by both past presidents Pip and Megs as classmate presidents last year. {this is now the second term of P. Pip as club president of RC Roxas.}
It is just an overwhelming feeling to be able to connect and reconnected and to find new friends thru our Public Image and the PRM.
We are looking forward to rendezvous with our fellow Rotarians in that part of Mindanao. soon. For now, let us continue to rekindle the fire of Rotary within us and spread the blessing of friendship thru Rotary.

Pres. Pip's Message - October 9

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

The New Generations Month is over but for all the Rotarians who took part in the activities to celebrate the role of the Youth, the past month was a humbling learning experience. On a personal note, I consider the celebration the core of Rotary ideal… to be prime movers of the youth. In fact, it is the statement of this Rotary years’ theme. The youth is the future, and molding them to be good citizens is our responsibility.

I commend the “movers” of the youth with special mention to PE Jerry Lames and PP Megs Lunn for successfully organizing and facilitating the Boys and Girls Week and the 1st Youth Leadership Forum, respectively. Despite the limited resources (and I meant ALL the resources possible) and the unforeseen circumstances that has to happen, we managed to deliver with flying colors!

Almost at the same time, typhoon Ondoy was wrecking havoc in Manila with a lot of lives lost and properties destroyed. The spirit of Rotary has once again risen above the situation to extend help to those people in need. Thanks to Sec Che-che and Rtn Leah for campaigning for donations. To date, we have sent two shipments through Sagip Kapamilya and we are in the process of consolidating stuff to send through our sister club, RC Forbes Park. To our surprise, our unsolicited effort was recognized by no less than the Philippine Daily Inquirer! Congratulations to all of us!

October is the month of vocations… and also R
tn Gary Potato’s baptism of fire. He plans to hold a weekly career talk to select High Schools in the City with the purpose of inspiring and guiding the students to take up the vocation of their interest. Hopefully, this will start on Friday next week after all the confirmations from possible speakers will be received.

On October 17, Saturday, Rtn Leah and Rtn Cheann are planning to hold a poster making contest at the Gaisano Activity Center to drum up the District’s campaign against TB. They will be inviting artistic elementary school students from the different schools in Roxas City to compose a poster with the theme: “I am stopping TB now! (Tapnaon ko ang TB subong!)”. The winning poster will be used as backdrop and T-shirt design that will be used during the “Run Against TB”, a fun run aimed to generate support and attention in the campaign against TB in Children that will be held on October 25, 2009. At that occasion also, the club will be launching the release of the educational pamphlets and posters that will be distributed to the different municipalities in the Province. This is the club’s commitment to the Provinces’ campaign against TB.

In November, our club will chair the Alay Lakad. This has been a very long
commitment with the Alay Lakad Foundation which has been headed and coordinated by PP Dante Corros since he was our club president. We will be discussing the details of the activity this Friday.

We also have created special committees for our 45th Foundation Day Celebration. There are a lot of plans for the whole month of December and everybody’s cooperation is urgently needed. We are also planning for a fund raising project next month, like the Bingo Socials which is presently being worked on by Sec Che-che and Rtn Pancho. If you have other fund raising ideas, we badly need them.

I am again appealing for your cooperation and help for our upcoming activities. I understand that you are busy with your respective careers but let me remind you that it a given that every Rotarian IS busy.

Sincerely,

Pip

Typhoon Ondoy Relief Operation

Sec. Che-Che's Column

While I was watching the news of the Tropical Storm Ondoy and the great flood it left in Luzon, I can't help but feel for all of the victims.. Hundreds of lives lost, homes destroyed, and people still missing until this date. How can they go back to their normal lives after what happened? Just losing my celphone made me really sad and bummed out what more losing everything you have worked for your whole life? I got teary-eyed just watching in my air-conditioned room, lying down on my comfortable bed. I felt I had to do something... anything. It all started with a text brigade that I forwarded to all Rotarians in my club (RC Roxas), a few Rotarians from Metro Roxas and Metro Roxas Central who are in my phone book. I Also forwarded the message to my family and friends. I thought that we got a lot of help from our friends in Manila during Typhoon Frank. It's time to return the favor. They need us now. I was surprised with the turn out of my simple text brigade. It was heart warming that a lot helped, gave donations, in any way they can.

ROTARY CLUB OF ROXAS AND THE CITY GOVERNMENT ...

by TSIP Pancho B Dela Cruz

The Rotary Club of Roxas in cooperation with the City Government observed Boys and Girls week last September 28 - October 2, 2009. From the 60 senior high school students from local public and private high schools who joined the selection process, 26 made it to the final list and the rare chance to act as the City officials from the office of the City Mayor, Vice Mayor, Sanggunian Panlunsod member down to the Department Heads for a week.

Brylle Clinton Deocampo of St Pius X Seminary, with his maverick personality and futuristic view on the prevailing social issues lead him to the Boy City Mayorship counterparting the City Mayor Hon. Vicente Bermejo. Catherine Borreros of Congressman Ramon A. Arnaldo High School, with her sense of humility yet strong in compassion for good governance was chosen as the Girl City Vice Mayor as the couterpart of the City Vice Mayor Hon. Ronnie Dadivas.

Counterparts for the Sanggunian Panlalawigan Members were Jenny Pearl Infante of Colegio dela Purisima Concepcion for Hon Erwin Sicad; Chito Victor Agurro II of Our Lady of Grace Academy for Hon. Amador Anisco, Jr.; Joher Mendez, Jr. of Capiz State University Main Campus for Hon Dennis Altobano; Leodel Barrio of Colegio dela Purisima Concepcion for Hon Greg Arcenas; David Solomon Cunada of St Pius X Seminary for Hon Herbert Chu; Al Michael Catalan of Our Lady of Grace Academy for Hon. Ramon Albar; Dion Greg Reyes of Filamer Christian College for Hon. Jose Agdalipe.

Randeelyn Apruebo of Capiz State University Main Campus for Hon. Rolando Ignacio; Jerik Clarito of Culasi national High School for Hon. Carla Abela; Scarlete Coopera of Filamer Christian College for Hon. Rogelio Delfin; Howell Labindao of Our Lady of Grace Academy for Hon. Wilson Acervo ( Liga President); Jose Marie Boje of Colegio Dela Purisima Concepcion for Hon Katrina Barrios (SK Federation President ); and Jheffy Lamasan of Culasi National High School for Mr. Dino Beluso as the Sanggunian Seceretary.

As counterparts for the City Department Heads, Nneka Datiles of Filamer Christian College made it to the Girl City Administratorship for Rey Cordenillo as the City Administrator; Patria Acolentaba of Tanque National High School for Teresita Bediones as the City Accountant; Mark Nikko Alfon of Our Lady of Grace Academy for Gilda Fernando as the City Budget Officer; Marriane Barrosa of Filamer Christian College for Joselito Almodeinte as the City Treasurer; Ruth Billones of Milibili National High School for Lorelei Piansay as the City Planning Officer; Crist John Blanco of Colegio dela Purisima Concepcion for Engr. Ardieli Ambrosio as the City Engineer.

Rochelle Faye Fantilaga of Filamer Christian College for Cynthia Besana as the City Social Welfare and Development Officer; Neil Paul; Faraon of St Pius X Seminary for Dr. Dante Corros as the City Veterinarian; Marvy Jane Orario of Tanque National High School for Glenn Amane as the City General Services Officer; Ma. Ellen Doloso of Congressman Ramon A. Arnaldo High School for Rogelio Arcangeles as the City Civil Registrar; and Thea Leonor Durana of Milibili National High School for Dr. Amelita Robles as the City Health Officer.

No less City Mayor Hon. Vicente Bermejo welcome the Boys and Girls in his office with his words as the good father of a family minutes after the power point presentation by the City Administrator Rey Cordenillio of the administration’s rallying call “SULONG”, its accomplishments, and future plans and programs. They were sworn in to their respective functions and went on to meet their counterparts.

The week long activity provided the youngsters an advance experience on how it is like to be elders in local governance and a sort of knowing the workings of the City Government. Danny Alovera of the City Tourism Office and Mrs Belinda Garrido of the City Agriculture Office acting as tour guides broke their innocence on the innermost of the City Museum, Hortus Botanicus, Teodoro Arcenas Trade Center, Metro Roxas Water District Plant, Libotong Cadimahan River, and the PHILVOCS by the talented volcanologist Ramil Atando.

The cameras and microphones of Local Television programs BUDYONG kapehan of Wesfardel hosted by the small but charismatic Rexam Laguda and ABRI-AGA of Alto Cable hosted by the mass oriented John Heredia provided them the early opportunity of uncovering their poise in the eyes of the televiewers. The bombastic drums of bombo Radio echoed their youthful views and convictions to as far as it can be heard.

Hon. Vice Mayor Ronnie Dadivas, a Rotarian himself, and Sanggunian Secretary Dino Beluso patiently took time tuning in the novice minds to legislative processes in a mock session day before the actual one. Added the unselfish and willing mentoring of their elected counterparts, the young wannabes surpassed the high expectations in the house. They went through with the agenda for the day with each side sitting their elected counterparts. In availing of the privilege hour, words of gratitude were common in the podium for the rare experience with their youthful words and phrases. But along with their fragile lines were the high level of concerns to the deteriorating environment, family planning, devastation of calamities, and sincere governance.

At the finale, youthful spirit converted the session hall to a high school classroom. The laughers, high fives, and young once body languages from the Hon Vice Mayor and the Hon. City Councilors apparently brought their memories back to their exciting high school days. A clear sign of relief from the year long burdens of legislative workloads.

The activity ended with the awarding of certificates at the office of the Mayor with his words of assurance for the continued support to the Boys and Girls project. In response, President Elect Rotarian Jerry Lames, Chairman of the project and Incumbent President Rotarian Dr. Pip Acepcion expressed their gratitude emphasizing the necessity of molding the youth to be good citizens and future community leaders.

Typhoon Ondoy Aid for Victims

The Rotary Club of Roxas' Boys and Girls Officials had their formal session last October 1, 2009 with their counterparts at the Sangguniang Panlunsod. They conducted themselves very well in the session and has passed resolutions, ie., thanking the City Government for accomodating them in their respective offices for 1 week, commending our club for hosting the activity, and most importantly expressing their sympathy and support to the typhoon victims in Manila.
They passed a resolution that was seconded and approved to give financial help of 500,000 pesos from the City Government for the victims of the recent typhoon. Upon endoresement and approval by the Mayor, this aid will go a long way in mending the devastations in Manila and nearby areas that was heavily hit by the calamity.
CONGRATULASTIONS BOYS AND GIRLS
On our end, we have dispatched our first batch of relief goods (mainly rice and dried fish) through ABS-CBN also on October 1, 2009. Another batch will be sent on October 3, and we have coordinated with the PAL manager Roxas PAL Branch that we will be sending cargo c/o PAL Foundation for free starting Monday and onwards. The goods will be received and distributed by our sister club, RC Forbes Park of Makati City.
We have received contributions not just from Rotarians but from several people as well!
It's great to hear when people go out of their way to help those in need... a true example of Service, our vocation as Rotarians!.Best Regards and God bless us all!
