ROTARY FOR PEACE

“Why are we here? A soldier swore to three things: to protect the Filipino people, to protect the territory of our country and to preserve the Constitutions. Never use the Army to be the enemy of the people. Our Special Forces Motto: DE OPRESSO LIBER – “To liberate the Oppressed”. From Guns to Books is just one of our projects with The Yakans and MNLF community. Soldiers go to them not to make war but to bring books, papers, pencils, etc. It is all about trust. They need more help. We are not to be afraid. We just need to communicate and understand what they really need. We are proud to transform them from fighters to farmers. Yakans and MNLF children make friends with soldiers and Rotary Club of Basilan. There is war because we don’t care to talk. These people are not lazy, they just need to be teach and give them a chance to show their skills. Tausog, etc now planting in the farm, we provided them with machineries. Last March 2016, we have harvested rice, etc. Now they are on the 3rd cropping. They said, “Thank you for now we are earning, we can send our kids to school, help our families, etc. We are not going to be terrorists anymore.” We bring Education – we bridge peace thru education to transform lives. They are overrated with prejudice that they are bad people. They are not our enemies (Yakans, MNLF). We have a flag worth living for and a flag worth dying for. As soldier, we fight to help communities; we fight because we love the people behind us. UMWAD JOURNEY.....

“The UMWAD journey. It is a project out of GG scholarship (2014). Umwad – progress – a 5 year inter-agency development program aimed at reducing extreme poverty in Brgy Baybay Norte, a coastal village in Miagao, lloilo City, Philippines. Umwad Timeline from 2014 – 2017. We go to the community finding the problem and the issues with them, and not telling them what the problems are. We did data assessment and analysis, collection and work on the plan. Umwad was realized because of the support of Rotary and can only be sustained with the support of Rotary. Umwad is Rotary project. It is your project. (Rotary International, University of Arizona, LGU and the community – the four leg pillars to make this project happened). Understand it. Own it. Campaign it. It is a concept of a community. We had synergy. We help more than 100 families gain alternative source of income, improve quality of living for the poorest, send 10 college students to university, assist 50 K-12 kids in the primary education and work on another Global Grant scholar who will help sustain the project. We want to improve the quality of their living in the next 5 years. Let us sustain this investment.” – Speaker - MONA LISA P. FAMILY SERVING HUMANITY

“The challenges affecting our family like digital technology, drugs/alcohol, peer pressure/teen pregnancy, degradation of moral values, materialism, single parenting, etc. We are leading with millenials and this is a digital age, this is reality. Let us know who to deal with them and not lead them to teen depression because we pressure them (i.e. to become 1st honor, etc); As parents, we have also ‘MAL Parenting’ like misbehavior (what adult do they follow, etc); absenteeism (parents who are also present but not emotionally involve); lack of parenting (skills and knowledge) – gap between dad and son, mother and daughter of both; The greatest thing that a parent can do for their children is to love and respect his/her spouse (remember your marriage vow); nurture your marriage with priority like bringing back the courtship day, express love and affection, make time, go out on a ‘dates’ and communicate effectively. Parenting is a vocation, duty, challenge and a never ending process. Strengthen it with knowing, understanding, respect, and accept your child as he/she is. Know your child/children, keep in touch with empathy, impose discipline by explaining the house rules (according to age), make time, create and enjoy intimate moments, build memories, do things together and remember the memories. More importantly, put spiritual dimension into your family. DISCON 2017 PLENARY SPEAKERS

ROTARY CLUB OF ROXAS AND HERCOR COLLEGE ROTARACT bag the most awards

Last March 9-11, 2017, Rotay International (RI) District 3850 (Western Mindanao, Negros, Panay Island and Guimaras Province) held this year a very successful District Convention for Rotary Year 2016-2017 at the new Grand Xing Imperial Hotel, Iloilo City, where both learning and fun were combined. It was well attended by more or less 800 Rotarians, Spouses and Rotaractors, notwithstanding the inclusion of well-chosen topics and eloquent speakers, plus the exciting musical icon night. As by design, a Rotary district conference is not complete without the most awaited year-end reports and awards.

The Rotary Club of Roxas under the cudgels of All-Star President Jocelyn Mosquete (MD) garnered the several well-deserved recognition and awards for all the hard work and the passion that carry Rotary’s Motto – “Service Above Self,” thru projects and activities around Roxas City, Capiz.
