R.I. President's Message

September 2012

Dear fellow Rotarians,

Many of you know that we now have five Avenues of Service in Rotary. The fifth, and newest, is New Generations Service. There are many ways to serve through this avenue, and you will read about some of them in this month’s issue.
All of the work we do to educate children, to improve maternal health, to help families live healthier lives – all of this is service to New Generations. We also serve New Generations by working to eradicate polio, helping to ensure that future generations of children will be born into a polio-free world.
Our youth and young adult programs, such as Rotaract, Interact, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Rotary Youth Exchange, are a very important part of this Avenue of Service. We must remember that the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow. By helping to develop young leaders and bringing younger members into our clubs, we strengthen communities – and Rotary’s future.
For most of my life, I have been a salesman. I learned long ago that being a good salesman is not enough. You must also have a good product. If you are a good salesman, you will make the first sale. But if you do not have a good product, you will make only the first sale. You will not make the second.
It is not enough to bring new members into Rotary. We want them to stay. We want the new, young members to become longtime members. We want them to be Rotary leaders in 10, 20, or 30 years.
How do we do this? We have to look at our product. We have to look at Rotary not with our own eyes, but with new eyes. When we invite a new member to join and that person’s answer is no, we should ask why. This is not to pressure someone into joining. It is to find out more information. What are the obstacles to membership? Is it an inconvenient meeting time? Is it too much of a time commitment? Is it something else that we have not thought of?
We need to ask questions, and we need to open ourselves to the answers. We cannot say, “No, we will not do this,” just because we have never done it before. Why not have child care at a meeting? Why not involve families in projects? Why not make attendance requirements less strict, or meet less often?
Our new Avenue of New Generations Service is an important step in ensuring many future generations of Rotary, and of Service Above Self.

R.I. PRES MONTHLY MESSAGE

July 2012

Dear fellow Rotarians,

I am part of the first generation to grow up in Japan after a terrible war. I think it is natural that my countrymen now place a great priority on peace. We saw where militarism brought our country, and we also saw the great economic growth that came when our nation made the choice to embrace peace.

This was the decision that allowed Japan to grow and thrive. It allowed generations of children to grow up in safety, to become educated, to improve their lives. It fundamentally changed the Japanese attitude toward other countries and cultures. It caused us to open our minds, to become more tolerant, to seek greater understanding.
And it allowed us to redirect our energies toward positive goals. In Japan, it is traditional to prioritize the needs of the society over the needs of the individual. This has always been part of our culture. In the weeks and months following the great earthquake and disaster of March 2011, this was what helped us to survive and rebuild.
This is a lesson that I think the whole world can learn from, in a positive way. When we see the needs of others as more important than our own needs – when we focus on a shared goal that is for the good of all – this changes everything. It changes how we relate to the world. It changes our priorities. And it changes how we understand the idea of peace.
In the 2012-13 Rotary year, peace will be our focus and our goal, and I will ask all Rotarians to actively work for Peace Through Service.
A belief in the power of service lies at the very heart of Rotary. By making service our priority, we put the needs of others above our own. We empathize more deeply with the difficulties of other people; we become more generous with our time and resources, and more open to new ways of thinking. Instead of trying to change others, we recognize that everyone and everything has something to teach us.
Through service, we become more tolerant of our differences and more grateful for the people in our lives. Our sense of gratitude drives us to understand others better and to see the good in everyone. Through better understanding, we learn to respect others. With mutual respect, we live with others in peace.
And so I ask you all to put Peace Through Service at the forefront of your Rotary work this year, and to commit to a Rotary goal of a more peaceful world.
Sakuji Tanaka

R.I. President Sakuji Tanaka

It’s a great honor to serve as your 2012-13 RI president and represent you in Rotary.  Since joining this organization in 1975, it has changed my life and given me more than I ever anticipated. I look forward to sharing some of that with you.
Through Rotary, I learned the purpose of my life wasn’t to earn more, but to help others.  Through our service, we learn that the problems that may seem large to us are really very small.

I also learned that through Rotary, we could build peace.  As part of the first generation to grow up in Japan after World War II, I understand the importance of peace and its connection to our well-being.
Peace can mean many things for many people, but however we understand peace, Rotary can help us achieve it. Rotary helps us meet the basic needs of health care, sanitation, food, and education.  These can bring peace. In addition, we need peace as well for vaccinators to go into countries such as Afghanistan to prevent children from getting polio. It is through our work as Rotarians that we help to build the foundation for a more peaceful world.
Through service, we can bring peace. This is why our 2012-12 Rotary theme is Peace Through Service

During my year as your president, I look forward to hearing from you on LinkedIn and when I post on the blog. I also hope to see you at one of my three Rotary Global Peace Forums.

SUCCESSFUL TURN-OVER OF ROTARY YEAR 2012-2013

RI PUBLIC IMAGE GRANT

My Dear PeaceMaker District Team, Assistant Governors and Presidents:

My fellow Rotarians in RID 3850:

It is with great pleasure that I inform our beloved district that our District Wide PR grant application has recently been approved by Rotary International.

Special recognition is accorded to PP Jun Arceo, PR District Committee Chair, for his unwavering commitment to this project.

With this pioneering endeavor, we will be showcasing "humanity in motion" and " up close" video materials in cable Tv all over our district. Respective Zone and individual Rotary club meeting details and contact numbers will be added to the presentation.

In so doing, we have taken that first step in fulfilling the Magic Circle for the coming year. With this District Wide PR grant, we will have a significant increase in Membership, which will then translate to more contributions for the Rotary Foundation.

Keep up the excellent work for our beloved District.

May God bless District 3850.

DG Biboy Jocson

Impact convention center is one of Asia’s largest and modern exhibition and convention center and with state of the art technology and with 5-star ultra modern facilities. Together with the host partners are The Rotary Foundation Trustees, the 2012 Bangkok Convention Committee, the 2012 Host Organization Committee and host districts 3330, 3340, 3350 and 3360 of Thailand.  They welcomed the more or less 1.2 million Rotarians from more than 200 countries all over the world.

At the plenary convention, there are simultaneous interpretations available in French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Thai.  At the Opening of the plenary session today (May 6, 2012), no less than Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabron Walailak Akra Rajakumari of Thailand delighted the delegates with her presence.

During the welcome remarks by the Convention Chair O.P. Vaish of the Rotary Club of Delhi Mid-Town, India, he said that coming together in the world convention is a commitment by each Rotarian to be innovators of change in the years to come. He said, “We have come from more than 200 countries, with different culture but united in one purpose, to make a difference. The flag of each country, each is representing the truth, courage, peace and unity in diversity.”
CP Lim of Malaysia, PN Lando Navarra of RC Metro Kalibo,
PP Megs of RC Roxas, and Pres. William of Myrtle USA

The program also recognized each the more than 200 country flags presented by RI Director Shekhar Mehta of the Rotary Club of Calcutta-Mahanagar West Bengal, India.  He also welcomed the new Rotary clubs from the Republic of Nauru, South Sudan and Bhutan. This was followed by Ms. Sung Tata Yang, the most well loved classic Thai singer, who sang the National Anthem of Thailand, being the host country to the 103rd Rotary International Convention, while Chin-chin Bhosle of India did the performance of the National Anthem of India.

The Aide of RI President Julio Sorjus of the Rotary Club of Barcelona Condal, Spain introduces RI President Kalyan Banerjee (RC Vapi, Gujarat, India) and his family. After which, this was followed by his welcome address.

RI Pres. Kaylan Banerjee in his speech reminded the delegates why they are brought together by Rotary in the theme, “Reaching within to Embrace Humanity.” He said, “Just look around you and be the change you want the world to see. Start within your family. The world is a better place than a year ago. The changes that have been changed are what you did. The change is because of you, for what you have done in the family, for what you have achieved in the community. It is because you have achieved to embrace humanity.
Pres. Kaylan Banerjee

Pres. Kaylan was overwhelmed by the attendance of the Rotarians from all over the world. With pride and joy, he mentioned some life changing experience and visit around the clubs in the world, through the club’s project and community outreach program done by the different clubs.  For him, each Rotarian has touched one life, making the world safer, healthier and hopeful. Kenya is one example for teaching the community sustain a livelihood project program; in New York, they sponsored a camp to embrace the disabled children and adults; the Shelter Box America had been providing shelters to afflicted disaster area victims; India started a literacy program for the poor but deserving students, envisioning a 200% literacy rate in year 2017; Rotarians caring for cancer patients, disabled and others who are still the state of poverty and repair and many other amazing service projects.  “There is so much to do in the world that we need to see around us,” he added. He even mentioned that when he visited Rome, His Holiness Pope smiles when he hears about Rotary.

Now, some government sought Rotary engagement to help solve problems in the society. By raising the public image, Rotary creates awareness to others who needed help. He also encouraged fellow Rotarians to let the people know of what Rotary does in the community. For him, Rotary is family, we help each other to bring family together to understand what we do in Rotary, so that the future will be there too. He encouraged them to get their family involved and to make Rotary part of their family, too.

Rotary’s public image is one of the thrusts of the Rotary’s program.  Thousands of Rotary links social media as a way to strengthen its network, to improve and develop more the Rotary’s profile to show the world what they do and connect themselves with others, too. This way, they put value to what they do, locally and globally. To inspire people even more, Pres. Kaylan reiterated that social media is a good way to inform the public what is Rotary, who are the Rotarians and what they do in the community. Rotary End Polio now is a landmark of success in creating major Rotary thrusts in public image.
Rotary Club of Roxas delegates led by Pres. Mariz Gepilano

“We can’t enjoy the warmth of a good heart when others are cold. The reason we gather in Bangkok, is part of something greater than ourselves. Everyone of us has given the resources to recognize it, appreciate it and share to others, so you know how much you can give,” Kaylan at the end of his speech.

Rotary convention is a life-enriching experience, making the 103rd Rotary International Convention in Bangkok is the second highest in attendance after the 2008 world convention.  There is more learning opportunity lined-up for the 5-day convention for all the Rotarians to learn and bring home. The next 104th Rotary International convention will be held in Lisbon, Portugal.

Gov.Melvin Dela Serna, Ms. Nocum
and PDG Jason Chan

Rotarians and guests were cordially greeted by Iloilo City Mayor Jed Mabilog where he gave emphasis how the organization Rotary International have helped and is bridging the people to reach within through government partnerships, assisted by other NGO’s, too;  while Congressman Jerry Trenas on the other hand, in his message, was amazed how the work of Rotary International brought about positive change and motivated other businessmen and professionals to practice their professions through The Four Way Test – 1. Is it the truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build goodwill and better friendship?  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

RI President Kaylan Banerjee believes that in order to achieve anything in this world, a person has to use all the resources he can draw on. And the only place to start is with our selves and within ourselves, thus, the theme “Reaching Within to Embrace Humanity.”

The Author with PP Boy Lee
The Rotary International president Kaylan Banerjee was represented by PDG Jason Chan of the Rotary of the Peak, Hongkong. “I congratulate your District Governor Melvin Dela Serna for an outstanding year. You have been working extremely hard in particular with the production of one of the most updated and informed newsletters in the Asian Region sharing with you all the remarkable work of District 3850,” Chan said in his special message during the opening of the plenary session.

A district conference is an annual meeting showcasing club and district activities. It is also a Rotary family event the mixes fellowship with learning and allows you to become more directly involved with the planning of the district’s future. It is at the district conferences where club can become even more aware of the ways in which Rotary is making the world a better place.

Note: This article will come up in the PRM (as per advised by PRM Editor) soon and have posted in some Provincial and Regional Newspaper, too, for Rotary Public Image.

DTTS IN CAPSULE

“Time flies,” as current Governor Melvin Dela Serna uttered during his opening remarks at the District Team Training Seminar for 2012-2013, last February 25, 2012, at the O Hotel, Bacolod City. Governorship in Rotary is only one year and they serve July 1 to June 30 of each year.

DTTS as we shortly called it, is the first of the series of training each Rotary Year, and Gov. Melvin said, it is an indispensable training seminar for those incoming district team and thereafter. DTTS define the roles and responsibilities of each team member. We always open our mind that as Rotarian, we are still students in Rotary – where we both have goals to attain the vision and mission of the district. As he reminded everyone in the plenary that, “many were called, but few are chosen.”

We enjoy Rotary as we do our best to come together in a fellowship and friendship, and in Rotary, laughter are wider and smiles wider.

Our incoming governor for 2012-2013 – PP Biboy Jocson (RC Bacolod North) is a full time physician by profession. As he accepts the challenge of the next Rotary year, he will be a part time Physician and a fulltime Rotarian soon. He is so proud to share that his spouse, Emily, will be joining him in his journey to greater heights for our district (3850) and together, they look forward to the team’s cooperation and full support.

On his speech, IDG Biboy is humbled by the presence of the district leaders as they are challenged together to achieve R.I. President Sakuji’s theme: PEACE THROUGH SERVICE. This coming Rotary year, we are to look back into the Rotary basics of Rotary where it serves as our lifeblood and to derive source of opportunity to address the need of the community. Peace through service is not a literal meaning, but rather, to serve and seize every opportunity to promote our vocation and instill peace and harmonious life through service.

Roles and responsibilities of each district team were facilitated by District Trainer – PDG Nanette Garcia, together with seasoned facilitator/speakers in Rotary like the person of PDG Chick Garcia, PDG Dave Villanueva, IPDG James Makasiar, DGN Mark Ortiz and PP Leilanie Alba (ABS- CBN).

PDG Nanette said, “DTTS is an excellent avenue to come together to identify challenges and direction of what we are to face in the next Rotary year. We provide adequate tools and skills to prepare each one and to open our mind to opportunity to learn and share.”

Yours truly, I was inspired to see how strong, organized and pro-active the members of the new district teams are and that we were all well-motivated to join IDG Biboy to his quest for Peace through Service.

Incoming Rotary International Sakura himself inspired all the incoming Governors to enhance public image through peace and prevention of conflict in all areas of Rotary Future Visions on peace and conflict prevention/resolution; disease prevention and treatment; water and sanitation; maternal and child health; basic education and literacy; and economic and community development. Sakura has this to say, “it not enough to just work hard, you need to know where you are headed, what do you want to accomplish and to make every member involved in each project so they will understand that success depends on them, to create a more peaceful world.”

One of the highlights of DTTS is the Rotary Moment. Where each one has to stand to give a 3-min talk on why Rotary is life-changing.  We called it the - ROTARY MOMENT. Through life-changing stories, we have served as the walking ambassador of goodwill, with the hope to inspire and change the world around us. This was facilitated by PP Leilani Alba – a TV personality of ABS-CBN Bacolod. Incoming Gov. Biboy believes that each member has a life-changing moment while serving in Rotary.

Yours truly was inspired when I was elected the 1st lady president of the Rotary Club of Kalibo, where in one of hundreds of moments I had experienced, was because of Arnel, our 1st Project Walk beneficiary in 2008. Arnel taught me how to be selfless and made me realized that, people are the most precious in life; PP Bert Nellas became tear eyed remembering the children with hydrocephalus in which he saw their faces of transformation while caring for them; PP Jack Po, because of sight saver founded Cataract Foundation and have treated more than 35 thousands of operation around the country that changed his outlook in Rotary; Rtn. Joel found inner peace, fulfillment with serving the underprivileged children and is willing to ‘die a little’ just to share himself time to serve through Rotary; Current governor Melvin Dela Serna found himself ‘marrying’ Rotary first and learned to know himself better by sacrificing sleepless nights to be able to deliver good results, his resiliency was tested through the many adversities he went through and said, “no tantamount of problem can overcome being a Rotarian”; Pres. Bruce Hall found faith in Rotary, for him it’s like going to church, where everyday he comes to the weekly Rotary meeting, it helps him learn things about our country, our people, listening to their stories and that every single week his involvement become stronger and better; some funny-inspiring stories of some Rotarians like PP Jun-Jun Arceo, where he went inside the comfort room and coming out a club president of his club and like many others, there were some who were elected in absencia, and was forced to become club president or member in Rotary, and realizing in the end, they found no regrets of joining; and lastly, PP Mike said, “I am a Rotarian, and Rotary will always be me.”

The training/seminar ended with a blast as fellowship was dinner hosted by IDG Biboy and spouse Emily Jocson, we all came to enjoy each other’s company and discovered each talent, where everyone was taught by PP Buting, how to sing – BUTTER –FLY – BUTTERFULY! (to the tune of Paro-Parong Bukid).

In discussing Peace through Service, we have a high regard for fellowship where we can promote and give peace a chance, through Service above Self.
