RC Roxas’ Campaign Against TB in Children

Our club’s proposed project is to disseminate information regarding TB in children. The main objective is to enhance public awareness and encourage health seeking behaviours of mothers/caretakers to bring their children for consult in the different public health centers of the province of Capiz that offer free diagnostic tests (e.g. X-ray, PPD) and TB medications.

This project is principally concerned with a series of messages about the disease (e.g. cough for >2 weeks, when to seek treatment, etc) and informing the community about what services are already in place (e.g. for treatment and diagnosis) to empower the community to take action.

The TB information dissemination will utilize these different medium:

4. Poster making contest

· The chosen works may be reproduce and use for the TB campaign

Encourages creativity among the different high school students in Capiz while imparting to them TB awareness

Educational sectors/high schools that are interested in participating

5. Fun Run for TB

· Invites to the different sectors will be distributed to increase participation

Create a day to raise awareness and possible funds to further TB cause ( e.g. solicitation letters to the different sectors, different booths possibly from the pharmaceutical companies, other anti-Tb paraphernalia such as bands or shirts)

All members of the community that may join or plain bystanders /witnesses to the event

Furthermore, as a club, we plan to coordinate with the local health centers and conduct lectures on TB to supplement the above information materials. In addition, we plan to help improving the TB detection rates in children by setting aside a day to do TB (i.e. PPD) screening through our Rotarian doctors at our adopted barangays.

NEW GENERATION MONTH CELEBRATION

Theme:

WALA NA SANG IBAN PA…IKAW NA!

September is New Generations Month.

Our youth are tomorrow’s leaders. Rotary Club of Roxas hopes to provide our young people access to resources, information, and individuals who truly care about their growth and development as positive, productive, participating people, likewise, to become responsive citizens of our country.

Through the celebration of NEW GENERATIONS MONTH, Rotarians can "make a friend" with a younger person – and foster the development of attitudes and skills for a life of service leadership, community engagement, and civic responsibility.

We will present thru this program that Rotary is also a youthful organization. RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar wrote in the current issue of The Rotarian that "We could just as well call September the month of our future, because investing in our youth is our future."

Rotary Club of Roxas, for the purpose of carrying the celebration for the youth, we proposed the celebration by inviting a young leader speakers who will provide inspiration and motivation to fellow young leaders of today’s generations. The program will be an opportunities of understanding, friendship, camaraderie and fun-learning activity for them.

The program and topic is designed in relations to Rotary’s International theme: THE FUTURE OF ROTARY IS IN YOUR HANDS, as suggested by District 3850.

The program objectives are the following:

To demonstrate the objects and ideals of Rotary to the young leaders.

To encourage initiative of leadership and motivations for the young leaders of our community and concerns for fellow youths.

To provide an effective training design to selected and potential young leaders of today’s generation.

To carry out the celebration of NEW GENERATIONS MONTH in relation to R.I. International Theme: THE FUTURE OF ROTARY IS IN OUR HANDS.

Match Club with RC Forbes Park, D3830

RC Rotary Club of Forbes Park, D3810 is our new sister club for RY 2009-2010. To give you a brief background, the club was formed by a group of civic minded citizens who believed that it was time to make a difference in their community. This challenge resulted in the chartering of RC Makati Forbes Park on Feb. 21, 1997 at the District Conference 3810 at the Philippine International Convention Center {PICC} during the term of DG Willy L. Segovia. Starting with 29 chartered members and determined to improve the welfare of the people within their community, a new Rotary Club was formed under the leadership of Charter Pres. Alex J. Ledesma. This was achieved through the efforts of our mother club of the Rotary Club of Makati West during the term of Pres. Vic Lim assisted by their past president Noel Laman.

The name MOVERS was adopted to reflect a unified effort that the services of RC Forbes Park to the community should be provided in one swift collective activity with effective and efficient programs and projects attaining positive impact, action and end result.

For the past twelve years, the members continued to combine their efforts and resources to reach out and implement a range of highly effective community based activities such as:

MEDICAL AND DENTAL CLINIC

NUTRITION AND FEEDING PROGRAM

SETTING UP VARIOUS TECHNICAL LIVELIHOOD CENTERS

CAREER GUIDANCE SEMINAR

INTERGENERATIONAL EVENT

ROTARY WATCH

HOUSING {GK Pinagsama Village, Taguig City}

ROTARY/B2B/GK PRODUCTIVITY BUILDING LIVELIHOOD PROGRAM

The current Rotary Year focuses on its five-prong program:

WALK - Wishes of Aid and Limbs for Kids}

LITERACY

HEALTH AND HUNGER

ENVIRONMENT

WATER

Today, RC Forbes Park is composed of forty members, everyone committed to fulfill and contribute to the Rotary Motto "SERVICE ABOVE SELF."

Note: The ROTARY CLOCK was taken at the office of PP HIRO Asandas during my tour at Canadian Beddings and Children Clothing factory of which PP Hiro owns, now the company is celebrating 50 years in service of honesty and hardwork. Congratulations PP Hiro and family. It was truly a great pleasure to be able to tour your kingdom hehe and looking forward to do business with you soon.

Club President's Message - ANG PATIYOG

September 13, 2009

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

I would like to congratulate everybody for a very successful and well attended Governor’s Visit, at least as far as our club is concerned. I would like to make special mention to our able and efficient set of officers who have clearly laid down to the governor the plans and visions of the club, not just for this year but for the coming Rotary years. The fellowship was great, food was superb and the venue was just perfect! It left me with a terrible headache for more than a day! Again, my kudos to the club!

The visits to Talon and Olotayan were very fruitful as well. Particularly in Olotayan, the governor has instructed Rtn Powell to come up with an estimate of the repair of the wall that is slowly being destroyed by water, and an estimate of the roofing for the daycare center building that was razed by fire including the railings to make the building child friendly. I hope Rtn Powell can come up with those ASAP so we can deliver our promise to the school kids and the people of Olotayan.

While still nursing a hang-over, I signed a “Matched Club Relations Agreement” with the Rotary Club of Forbes Park at the Manila Polo Club in Makati. Megs and I were wearing our purple gala (thought were overdressed) and to my surprise, everybody were in business suit (in coat and tie) with matching name plaques with their Rotary Club seal on their chests. They made me sit at the presidential table together with another Rotarian from a Makati Club who is their district’s chair for community service, President Beans of RC Forbes Park, and the president of their Rotary Corp who was joining them for lunch. Unfortunately, I had to rush for a procedure in Quezon City, so Rtn Megs took over to introduce our club to them. Got a text message from Megs later in the day that we have to prepare a seafood feast on December 11 since they decided to come over to celebrate our 45th birthday (attn Matti, Chad, 3L’s, Rey: we need talaba, fresh fish, crabs, etc…).

September is the New Generations Month and we have come up with various activities. The Boys and Girls Week, chaired by PE Jerry Lames is scheduled on September 28 to October 2, and Rtn Megs Lunn will be introducing a new activity for college student hopefully to take off our Rotaract Club. It will be a Leadership Forum on September 25, 2009, entitled: “Wala na sang Iban…Ikaw na!”. Other volunteers to this undertaking are Rtn Pancho dela Cruz, Rtn Rexam Laguda, and myself who will be acting as lecturers and facilitators. I will leave the details of the above activities to the respective chairs.

Lastly, I have appointed Rtn Megs to take-over the helm of “Ang Patiyog” which she gladly accepted to the delight of PE Jerry.

Sincerely,

Pres Pip

Joint Governor's Address event

{This message was delivered by P. Pip during the Joint Governor's Address at the Lakehouse last Sept. 9, 2009.}

Last night, while I was watching the video presentation of our district governor, I was so humbled and felt so trivial. He has accomplished even more than any of us put together, without expecting anything in return – a true paradigm of Rotary’s dogma, Service Above Self. In fact, it is the truest meaning of public service who accomplishes without asking in return, and who delivers without depleting somebody else’s coffers.

This is not an easy undertaking but it gives the utmost fulfillment of having made a difference.

Each of us has roles to accomplish as part of our job description as a Rotarian and we have no excuse to falter because we are guided by the ultimate test of integrity… Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it bring goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?.

Next year poses a formidable challenge to every Filipino to choose whom they think could best lead us and reform the government for the next six years. This year, Rotary reminds us that the future is what we make it. This year, our district gave us an idea of how and what a leader should be, in the person of our distinguished district governor, very willing to extend and share Rotary to the privileged few.

There is no room for a reluctant Rotarian, all the more for a reluctant leader. We need someone who is young and dynamic, able and disposed to serve without taking anything in return. I firmly believe that such people are amongst our midst and must be a Rotarian at heart.

On December 11, my club will turn 45 years old… 45 years of nobility and service. A challenge for us to preserve it for another 45 years or even more. As RI President John Kenny states it “If you believe in Rotary and its power to make a difference in the world, it is time to stand up and commit to doing the best job you can – with all your mind, your heart, and your soul. The Future of Rotary Is In Your Hands.”

Sec. Che-Che's Column - Ang Patiyoy Sept. 13, 2009

Guests last Sept. 4, 2009

Rota Kids RJ and Clouds
Dr. Jaime and Patricia Yrastorza - Operation Taghoy/Uplift Iternationale
Barb Moyer - Operation Taghoy/Uplift Internationale
Dr. Oscar and Ging - Operation Taghoy Kalibo

Topics Discussed:

*Operation Taghoy - Jan.25-30, 2010

- Uplift Internationale's 20th anniversary

- Its aims are education and healthcare projects in Ormoc

- Uplift Internationale wanted to narrow down their focus of mission so they decided to focus on cleft lip and/or palate on children. They found out that children having these problems experience nursing difficulties, hearing and speech impairments, malnourishment, psychological effects as they grow up. This is how "Operation Taghoy" started.

- Operation Taghoy on their 1st decade has operated on about 30 children per year, on the 2nd decade, about 70 to 80 children per year, with 6 host hospitals {www.upliftinternationale.org}

- Their challenges now are to have more Operation Taghoy venues; to promote, support, and subsidize year round programs/ community/ clinics, like the Taghoy Facial Cleft Clinics in Ormoc; And a challenge for the coming decade (or an ambitious dream) is to have a Cranio-Facial Center which have received positive response so far.

Same challenges for our club in the years to come, who knows, the 2nd Taghoy Cleft Clinic in the Philippines in Roxas City, how about it, P. Pip?

Friday, September 11, 2009

The past few days has placed the whole nation in an emotional roller coaster! It ended a great chapter in our history, but it makes me wary of what the future may bring. It seems that the circumstances make me believe that good men are taken early, and we are left with corrupt people to manipulate our future. We allow these people to encroach in our system like termites simply because they are the moneyed few whose influence has a tag price, in cash or kind.

The late President Corazon Aquino, despite being rich and landed, has nurtured the country with humility and compassion for the poor throughout her service as leader of a revolutionary government.

Twenty six years ago, I was admittedly in the opposite political color, and I fervently refused calling someone a hero simply because he lied down bloodied and lifeless in the pavement. I honestly thought that our then government was giving us a fair deal. Good discipline, nice infrastructures, fair economic gains at par or even surpassing our other Asian counterparts.

But the transition of power has to move, the voice of the people reigned sovereign, then came another chapter of uncertainties. Will a woman president overcome the challenges of running a nation, whatever was left of it? Will she continue to cling on to power after being overwhelmed by its lure?

As one journalist addressed President Cory Aquino in his eulogy, “she was one damn good person”, and that sums it all. She was good in every sense of the word which made her overcome all the odds and turned out to be the most loved and respected moral leader of the country until her demise. We should be inspired by her life and deeds. We should carry on her moral leadership and lead by example. After all, our future does not depend on anybody else. The future of our country, our children, and our children’s children lie in our hands…

Allow me to share an essay by a friend sent to me by email almost a year ago. She’s now currently working with WHO in East Timor.. The country she knew of and grew at never skipped her mind…

"I refuse to let this country go to hellbecause it is the only country I call mine and it is myresponsibility to make sure I have done what I could for it"

To all Filipinos Everywhere:I used to think that corruption and criminality in the Philippineswere caused by poverty. But recent events tell me this isn't true. Itis one thing to see people turn into drug addicts, prostitutes, thieves and murderers because of hunger and poverty, but what excusedo these rich, educated people have that could possibly explain theirbizarre behavior? And to think I was always so relieved when pettysnatchers got caught and locked away in jail because I never fullyrealized that the big time thieves were out there, making the lawsand running our country. Can it get any worse than this?Every night, I come home and am compelled to turn on my tv to watchthe latest turn of events. I am mesmerized by these characters. Theyare not men. They are caricatures of men - too unreal to bebelievable and too bad to be real. To see these "honorable" crookslambast each other, call each one names, look each other in the eyeand accuse the other of committing the very same crimes that theythemselves are guilty of, is so comical and apalling that I don'tknow whether to laugh or cry. It is entertainment at its worst!I have never seen so many criminals roaming around unfettered andlooking smug until now. These criminals wear suits and barongs, strutaround with the confidence of the rich and famous, inspire fear andawe from the very citizens who voted them to power, bear titles like"Honorable", "Senator", "Justice", "General" and worse, "President".
.Ironically, these lawless individuals practice law, make our laws, enforce the law. And we wonder why our policemen act the way they do!These are their leaders, and the leaders of this nation รขโ‚ฌโ€Å“ RobinHoodlum and his band of moneymen. Their motto? "Rob the poor, moderate the greed of the rich."It makes me wonder where on earth these people came from, and whatkind of upbringing they had to make them act the way they do for allthe world to see. It makes me wonder what kind of schools they wentto, what kind of teachers they had, what kind of environment wouldproduce such creatures who can lie, cheat and steal from an alreadyindebted country and from the impoverished people they had vowed toserve. It makes me wonder what their children and grandchildren thinkof them, and if they are breeding a whole new generation of improvedFilipino crooks and liars with maybe a tad more style but equallynegligible conscience. Heaven forbid!I am an ordinary citizen and taxpayer. I am blessed to have a jobthat pays for my needs and those of my family's, even though 30% ofmy earnings go to the nation's coffers. Just like others in my lot, Ihave complained time and again because our government could notprovide enough of the basic services that I expect and deserve.
Ruttyroads, poor educational system, poor social services, poor healthservices, poor everything. But I have always thought that was whatall third world countries were all about, and my complaints neveramounted to anything more. And then this. Scandalous government deals. Plundering presidentspointing fingers. Senators associated with crooks. Congressmen whoaccept bribes. Big time lawyers on the side of injustice. De Veneciaratting on his boss only after his interminable term has ended,Enrile inquiring about someone's morality!
The already filthy richAbalos and Arroyo wanting more money than they or their greatgrandchildren could ever spend in a lifetime. Joker making a joke ofhis own "pag bad ka, lagot ka!" slogan. Defensor rendereddefenseless. Gen. Razon involved in kidnapping. Security menproviding anything but a sense of security. And it's all about money, money, money that the average Juan de la Cruz could not even imaginein his dreams. Is it any wonder why our few remaining decent andhardworking citizens are leaving to go work in other countries? And worst of all, we are once again saddled with a power-hungrypresident whose addiction has her clinging on to it like barnacle ona rusty ship. "Love (of power) is blind" takes a whole new meaningwhen PGMA time and again turns a blind eye on her husband's financialdeals. And still blinded with all that is happening, she opts totraipse around the world with her cohorts in tow while her country isin shambles. They say the few stupid ones like me who remain in the Philippinesare no longer capable of showing disgust. I don't agree.
Many like mefeel anger at the brazenness of men we call our leaders, embarrassment to share the same nationality with them, frustrationfor our nation and helplessness at my own ineffectuality. It is notthat I won't make a stand. It is just that I am afraid my actionswould only be futile. After all, these monsters are capable ofanything. They can hurt me and my family. They already have, though Imay not yet feel it.But I am writing this because I need to do something concrete. I needto let others know that ordinary citizens like me do not remainlukewarm to issues that would later affect me and my children. I wantto make it known that there are also Filipinos who dream of somethingbetter for the Philippines. I want them to know that my country isnot filled with scalawags and crooks in every corner, and that thereare citizens left who believe in decency, fairness, a right to speak,a right to voice out ideas, a right to tell the people we havetrusted to lead us that they have abused their power and that it istime for them to step down. I refuse to let this country go to hellbecause it is the only country I call mine and it is myresponsibility to make sure I have done what I could for it.
Those of us who do not have the wealth, power or position it needs tobattle the evil crime lords in the government can summon the power ofgood. We can pray. We can do this with our families every night. Wecan offer petitions every time we celebrate mass. We can ask othersto pray, too, including relatives and friends here and overseas. Andwe can offer sacrifices along with our petitions, just so we get themessage to Him of our desperation in ridding our nation of thesevermin. After all, they cannot be more powerful than God!I implore mothers out there to raise your children the best way youcan. Do not smother, pamper, or lavish them with too much of thematerial comforts of life even if you can well afford them. Teachthem that there are more important things in this world. I beg allfathers to spend time with their children, to teach them the virtuesof hard work, honesty, fair play, sharing, dignity and compassion รขโ‚ฌโ€Å“right from the sandbox till they are old enough to go on their own.Not just in your homes, but at work, in school, everywhere you go. Begood role models. Be shining examples for your children so they willlearn to be responsible adults who will carry and pass on your familyname with pride and honor.I call on educators and teachers รขโ‚ฌโ€Å“ we always underestimate the powerof your influence on the minds of our youth. Encourage them to beaware of what is happening in their surroundings. Instill in them alove of their country, inculcate in them the value of perseverance inorder to gain real, worthwhile knowledge, help us mold our childreninto honorable men and women. Encourage our graduates, our best andbrightest, to do what they can to lift this country from the mire ourtraditional politicians have sunk us into.
The youth is our future รขโ‚ฌโ€Å“and it would be largely because of you, our educators, that we willbe able to repopulate the seats of power with good leaders, presidents, senators, congressmen, justices, lawmakers, law enforcersand lawful citizens.I ask all students, young people and young professionals everywhereto look around and get involved in what is happening. Do not let youryouth be an excuse for failure to concern yourselves with the harshrealities you see. But neither let this make you cynical, because weneed your idealism and fresh perspective just as you need the wisdomof your elders. YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU! Let your voices be heard. Dowhat you can for this land that gave you your ancestors and yourheritage. Use technology and all available resources at hand tospread good. Text meaningful messages to awaken social conscience.Try your best to fight moral decay because I promise you will notregret it when you become parents yourselves.
You will look back atyour past misdeeds and pray that your children will do better thanyou did.Remember that there are a few handful who are capable of running thiscountry. You can join their ranks and make their numbers greater. Weare tired of the old trapos. We need brave idealistic leaders whowill think of the greater good before anything else. I voted forAtty. Martin Bautista and his team and I sure hope they will runagain. Do your utmost to excel in your chosen field. Be good lawyers, civil servants, accountants, computer techs, engineers, doctors, military men so that when you are called to serve in government, youwill have credibility and a record that can speak for itself. For love of this country, for the future of our children, for themany who have sacrificed and died to uphold our rights and ideals, Iurge you to do what you can. As ordinary citizens, we can do muchmore for the Philippines than sit around and let crooks lead us toperdition. We owe ourselves this. And we owe our country even more.

Olotayan Island

Our trip to Olotayan Island was worth all the effort...With Govenor Edgar Sy as our important guest and passenger, surely, this time, there is no more 6-feet-wave that can stop us in crossing the sea to see our adopted village..

As we are docking into the shoreline of the island, we can already see the delapidated school fence that is about to collapse anytime and the recently burnt 3 school classroom that includes the school material and equipments of the Day Care Center.

Gov. Edgar Sy made our day for seeing problems as opportunities ,to be able to extend beyond our imagination what we can do to help out...the day before was our club assembly with Zone IV AG/PP Vic Santamaria of RC Kalibo. Each committee chair took turns and reported on their promising projects for the coming months ahead, apart from the many accomplished projects for the first quarter. One more thing, we can't just say NO to the sumptous dinner provided by the first lady of the house of PE Jerry, spouse Susan and the warm hospitality of the P.Pip and his family for hosting the club assembly at their residence.

One day before the club assembly, we have visited another adopted Barangay - Talon of which Rtn. Che-an administered the giving of free medicines to 17 school children who was found anemic during the last screening done by the club 3 months ago. These medicines are supplemental for 3 months and another screening again will be conducted in the coming months ahead to see the development of the children. P. Pip was joined by PP Mark Ortiz, PP Reubin Yap, Rtn. Matti and Rtn. Megs Lunn. DG Edgar previously before his term as District Governor donated two complete sets of computer to Talon Elementary School. His trip is never boring, huh! There is always something to be done when your heart is willing and open.

Going back, Olotayan Island is a 30-minute boat ride, the only island Barangay of Roxas of which RC Roxas has just finished the 3 in 1 + 1 project: Literacy (building the library rooms, putting up the ceiling insulators, bookshelves and the workbooks from DG Edgar), Health (building the health clinic and providing it with some equipments needed for health and wellness), AH1N1 lectures and the plus 1 is the distribution of FREE medicines for children that was found anemic.

The boat ride coming back though wet and a little rough was another exciting learning conversation for P.Pip, PE Jerry, Rtn. Powell and Rtn. Megs with the beloved District 3850 Governor Edgar "Diotay" Sy.

Note: Pictures to follow.

THANK YOU GOVERNOR EDGAR SY and see you more in our upcoming events...

See you!!

Ciao!
